Pretentious products

I just think lately some products have become a little silly and pretentious in their marketing. It's all a result of this global food craze washing over us - the food 'religion' that's more popular and pervasive than the new Pope.

Take chips for instance. I mean when I was a kid munching on chips the choices were pretty much chicken, barbecue, salt and vinegar and plain. I was happy enough with these as choices. Although, strangely enough cows seemed to have been overlooked in the chip scene - I dunno, would beef flavoured chips not be okay for some reason? Anyway, sure, over the years other flavours like sour cream and chives, cheese and onion and tomato and basil have snuck onto our supermarket shelves. And that's okay, there are some really tasty new flavours out there now.

But, I mean, c'mon! Am I honestly going to be able to detect whether or not the chicken flavour in my chips is organic as opposed to non-organic? Or, that the herbs had been hand selected (even if they were in the first place)? Or, that the salt is supposed to have been imported from the Himalayas? Of course not! It's BS.

Anyhow, enjoy your chips. Enjoy this post too - I've specially hand picked and lovingly crafted it for you. Can you tell?

People's names - Olivia Newton's John

Well here's Olivia sitting in her bathroom on the John, talking to the mirror. We all know a lot of these celebs get work - some more than others. And Olivia sure has had some work. But a bit too much. I mean she used to be quite good looking, don't you think? Now she looks like someone else. I don't know who, just someone else. She used to look like herself.

People's names - Joe's Hockey

Hello mammoth fans! In case you're located in a foreign country or otherwise have no idea who I'm talking about, it's Joe Hockey this week. He's Australia's new Treasurer (unfortunately for us). Poor Joe. He was all talk when he was in opposition (I mean they all are really), tearing down the then Treasurer. But now that he has to actually perform as Treasurer himself, he's a bit lost. He's clutching at straws. He's swinging wildly. He's slashing spending left, right and centre - slashing like someone who has no worthwhile reform ideas of their own.

Anyhow, stick around for the next time I post something amazing! That should be next week.

People's names - Tony's Abbot

That's Abbot with one 't', as in a head of a monastery. Remember? Tony Abbott (Australia's prime minister) once trained as a Roman Catholic seminarian! Ok, a monastery usually refers to monks and nuns in an abbey. But you get the picture.

Here's Tony's abbot reflecting on our dear Tony.

CCTV In Operation

I'm always on the lookout for signs - anywhere on this earth - that are ambiguous and make me think of another meaning for them. I spotted this one in our local shopping arcade. Yep, I could have gone back and photographed the actual sign (and I didn't have my cell phone with me at the time)...but I pulled this one above from the internet instead. You get the picture.

It's only horseplay, geez!

All aboard the Chattanooga church camp express! I'm sure you didn't miss this recent story of the, shall we say, over zealous church camp counselor. And the unfortunate response by the church committee that the incident merely amounted to horseplay.

Kids will be kids

Week in, week out too often it's a bad news story that makes the headlines or close to it. So, it's nice to see that this week one of the feature stories was about a 3-year-old hearing his father for the first time ever: http://abcn.ws/1c9py0U

Patient Sues Over 8-month Erection

News story: http://usat.ly/16aXKb9

Okay. Three things to remember in cases like this. Number one, judges always find these scenarios hard going. Two, the complainant better be damn sure his legal team presents rock solid evidence. And, three, there can be quite stiff penalties imposed if the complainant wins his case.

Those points aside, you gotta take your hat off to this poor guy - it takes balls to sue in such circumstances.

Accidental fatal shooting by 4-year-old Arizona boy

Terrible story.

But previous claims by the NRA ring in my head. Sophistry in - common sense out the window. That's what this kind of argument amounts to.

Church Approves of Same-Sex Marriage

Even here in Australia same-sex marriage has been a hot topic recently. And so I like to break things down to what really matters. Keep things simple. If it's good, the same sex in a marriage is no problem at all. Just mix it up from time to time and keep it interesting. Everyone will be happy that way.

No-sex marriage is where the problems start.

Satellite TV

Might be a tad difficult to get a clear picture from this distance. But, I guess they know what they're doing.
